There is a version of this story I have seen dozens of times. A business gets a website built for a few thousand dollars. It looks reasonable. It loads. The team signs off on it and moves on. Three years later, nothing has changed ā the site still loads, it still looks roughly the same, and it is still generating almost no enquiries. Nobody connects those two facts.
The first day back in the office is a diagnostic. Not for the year ahead ā for the year just finished. What you walk back into tells you more about how well you ran your business than any retrospective you could write over the break.
The interesting thing about working with clients across 25 years is that you stop being surprised by the results and start being surprised by how long the wrong assumptions persist. The same beliefs that were questionable five years ago are still driving decisions today. Mobile is just for consumers. Faster is always better. More information from users equals better leads. None of these hold up when you actually measure them.
I have heard some version of this story dozens of times. A business spends real money on a website. The designer delivers something that looks sharp. The client’s colleagues say it looks great. Everyone moves on.
Most people spend the last two weeks of December catching up with family, switching off, and eating things they’ll regret. My team at Chillybin does some of that too. But those quieter days between Christmas and the new year are also when I do the internal work I never have time for during a busy quarter. Better project templates. Tighter handover documentation. Streamlined onboarding processes. Nobody’s writing a case study about any of that. It won’t win an award. But it’s the work that makes everything else run better for the next twelve months.
The WordPress Vulnerability Report that dropped on December 3rd listed 106 new vulnerabilities across the ecosystem. Forty-one of them are still unpatched. That number alone would be worth paying attention to at any time of year. The timing makes it worse.
Most businesses treat website maintenance the way they treat dental work. Ignore it long enough, and by the time you deal with it, the problem is ten times more expensive and painful than it needed to be.
A few months back I had a discovery call with an education provider based near Orchard Road. Twenty staff. One marketing coordinator. A decent reputation built over years of word-of-mouth in Singapore’s competitive tuition and enrichment market.
